Some women took a more direct approach. Between 2,000 and 5,000 women volunteered to be nurses. These women earned the nickname ‘Florence Nightingales.’ These women took care of the soldiers directly. It was a gruesome job. They had to personally see dead and injured soldiers. And nurses had to help the doctors clean and bandage wounds, feed injured soldiers, give medicine, perform operations and medical procedure, including amputations. It was not an easy job and some women prefered to stay at home. These women helped the war by raising money. They organized sewing circles, held charity drives and fundraisers, and had many, many fairs all over the country. These women supplied soldiers with clothing, food, medical supplies, even bedding.
